CLINICAL SKILLS REFRESHER 6 Hr SESSION #3
The purpose of the CLINICAL SKILLS REFRESHER 6 Hr SESSION #3 is to provide an in-class refresher for Intravenous (IV) skills, Phlebotomy skills and Injection skills. This course will be provided through classroom lecture, video skills presentation and hands on training. The course will allow for hands on practice sessions to build confidence. The course is designed to educate and reinforce the knowledge of nurses; ARNP, RN, LPN, Medical Assistants and other individuals who are working in the health care environment as well as those who have been out of clinical settings for a while.
The course reviews; IV Therapy procedures; how to care for patients receiving Intravenous therapy, selecting appropriate veins, appropriate catheter size, tourniquet application, performing venipuncture – IV insertion, Tegaderm dressing application, priming IV tubing, flushing extensions, hanging IV Fluid bags, discontinuing the IV access as well as calculating IV flow rates. The course will allow the participant to practice skills on manikins so that you will have increased confidence to work in the Hospital, Long term care, skilled Nursing Facilities, Home Health care, Clinics and other Healthcare settings. Please note that LPN in the state of Florida needs to complete the IV Therapy 30 hr certification; for more information see website. If an LPN has already completed the 30 hr course in the past, then the LPN can complete this refresher.
The Phlebotomy skills review:
The participant will perform venipuncture technique /lab draws on manikins within the classroom/lab. Phlebotomy practice sessions include drawing blood via vacutainer, butterfly and syringe methods (mannequin).
The injection skills review:
The course includes preparing injections from a vial, preparing injections from ampule, Insulin Preparation and administration, drawing up and mixing more than one type of insulin for administration. Review of guidelines for the delivery and safe management of intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal and z- track injections. This course will provide the healthcare workers with an understanding of various aspects of injection administration, how to locate the appropriate sites for administration, information about the different needle gauge /size, appropriate needle disposal, infection control standards and the scope of practice.
